Symposium Background
The Department of Forensic Sciences, in collaboration with the Centre for Urban Ecology, Biodiversity, Evolution and Climate Change (CUBEC), JAIN (Deemed-to-be University), proposes to organise WFCCP 3.0: Wildlife Science for Conservation Action in February 2027 at the School of Sciences Campus, JAIN (Deemed-to-be University), Bengaluru.
The symposium is designed around a simple progression:
SCIENCE → EVIDENCE → CONSERVATION ACTION
It will bring together wildlife biologists, ecologists, conservation scientists, forensic experts, veterinarians, researchers, Forest Department and Police personnel, technologists, students, NGOs and other practitioners to examine how scientific knowledge can be converted into evidence and ultimately into practical conservation decisions.
The programme will comprise a two-day national scientific symposium, followed by a two-day satellite field programme at Bhadra Tiger Reserve, Lakkavalli side, with selected participants.
The field component will move the discussion from the classroom to the landscape through wildlife monitoring, field sampling and wildlife crime-scene investigation.
This positioning is consistent with the revised scientific concept, which brings ecology, wildlife forensics, technology and wildlife health together rather than treating them as separate disciplines.
Rationale of WFCCP 3.0:
Wildlife conservation today increasingly depends on information coming from several scientific and operational domains. Ecology can tell us where species occur and how landscapes are changing; technology can improve detection and monitoring; veterinary and wildlife health sciences can reveal emerging risks; and forensic science can convert material from a crime scene into usable evidence.
Yet these disciplines often operate independently.
WFCCP 3.0 is intended to bring these perspectives together around practical conservation questions. The emphasis will be on using scientific information to make better decisions, whether the issue is biodiversity monitoring, wildlife health, human–wildlife interaction, wildlife crime or protected-area management.
The revised programme specifically incorporates emerging tools such as camera trapping, bioacoustics, eDNA, GIS, remote sensing, AI and molecular approaches, alongside wildlife health, forensics and community-oriented conservation.

Established in the year 2011, the Department of Forensic Science plays a pivotal role in the field of criminal investigation and justice. The department’s continuous efforts focus on delivering comprehensive education, producing well-prepared professionals in Forensic Science, who serve in various capacities both nationally and internationally. Its multifaceted scope encompasses various branches of forensic science, including forensic psychology, ballistics, DNA profiling, crime scene investigation, digital forensic, information security, to name a few. The department's comprehensive approach caters to diverse aspects of forensic science, facilitating the pursuit of truth and justice in legal proceedings to under-graduate, post-graduate and doctoral programs.
CUBEC (Center for Urban Ecology, Biodiversity, Evolution and Climate Change) is an evolving research centre under the JAIN (Deemed-to-be) University aspiring to bring together collaborators, scientists, postdoctoral scientists, PhD-students as well as technical and administrative staff to work on fields like macroecology, biogeography, evolutionary biology, ecology, population biology, climate change research, conservation biology. CUBEC. intends to conduct high-profile research on patterns and processes shaping life on Earth. Through extensive national and international research collaborations, the ultimate goal of the centre would be to address and assist human society in tackling issues to
-
Avert the worldwide extinction of the flora and fauna
-
Envisage the effect of global climate change on biodiversity.
The Center aims to advance the knowledge and practice of modern evidence-based management and lend itself to contributions in research, teaching, and service. The Center also is interested in educating Indian citizens as to how they can play a role in supporting sustainable development (SDG) in their lives, careers, and wider life choices where best sustainable practices are shared and action. plans are implemented in the national context.
